 WORKSHOP IN PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO

Arrival Feb. 25 and Depart March 1, 2008

      SHOW ME THE COLOR

Drench yourself in color, design & ideas with an innovative technique in an intensive & fun 4 day workshop called - SHOW ME THE COLOR.

Featured in the March 2007 issue of Lapidary Journal, this incredible process of pigment on copper is a way of having color on metal that isn't enamel.

You will be making several pieces of your choice using PMC (Precious Metal Clay) and copper. Your pieces will consist of several layers. The top layer will be the pigmented copper and you will then rivet that to a back plate made of PMC using brass rivets.

These are the skills you will learn during this workshop:

  • Understanding the process and discussing the properties of both the copper and PMC to start you on your creative designing process of your pieces.
  • Discussing color combinations and the color wheel for best color choices to your designs.
  • Designing your pieces and cutting them out of copper using a jewelers saw.
  • Refining the edges and treating the copper for the pigment application.
  • Applying the process to the copper in the many stages of this technique.
  • Experimenting with other alternative methods of applications of products for working surfaces for your pigment.  This will allow you to decide on the best approach for your piece (s).
  • Making tear away sheets, a method developed by Celie Fago for Precious Metal Clay to be used with your back plate of PMC.
  • Forming and cutting out your PMC back plate(s) and all the necessary steps to finishing to your PMC for the final step of firing.
  • Soldering any necessary backing , such as pin backs, etc. if applicable. Will also show a unique way to make a pin backing taught by Andy Cooperman.  This is much nicer than the conventional store bought sterling pin backs.
  • Attaching your top copper piece to the bottom PMC piece with brass rivets. (you will be learning how to rivet!) You also will learn how to make your own sterling rivets and the concept of riveting and the importance of the proper drill bit needed for the particular gauge of wire used.

No experience is needed. Beginners as well as those with experience are welcome. This is a fun innovative technique, so the focus is on that application and not metalsmithing skills. Although sawing, soldering, texturing, PMC applications and many other skills will be learned.

This is an open, non competitive, creative atmosphere and consideration will be given to personal time and expansion of your own talent to ensure a rejuvenating experience and inspiratioin for creative work.

A supply list will be provided prior to the workshop or you may purchase a materials kit ahead of time from me. Contact me for the supplies list, materials kit or if you should have any further questions.

The cost for this workshop is $1325.
Includes 5 nights lodging, breakfast & lunch on class days.
Price is based on double occupancy.
(please note: Does not include airfare or dinner)

There are a few spaces left,  call Sam to reserve yours today.

Arrive on Tuesday, February 25, 2008 and enjoy a cocktail by the pool.
Then those who choose to can go out and enjoy a wonderful
Mexican dinner at a nearby restaurant.
The class starts Wednesday the 27th at 10 am through 5 pm
with a 2 hour lunch. (Daily)
Check out will be Sunday morning, March 1st.
